HIGHLIGHTS

  • Mumbai power blackout: Such a huge  power failure was unparalleled for the nation's financial capital.

Huge parts of Mumbai and its rural areas confronted a power failure, because of which a few trains were held up. The blackout, as per the city's electricity supply board, was a result of the "TATAs incoming electric supply failure". Traffic lights at certain areas excessively stopped working.

Mumbai air terminal and the stock trade were functional.

The central and western line train services have been restored. Western Railway said the breakdown was due to a grid failure at Tata Power. Commuters were seen walking on rail tracks.

Such a large-scale power failure is unprecedented for the country's financial capital. The electricity supply, interrupted at 10:05 am, was expected to be restored in 45 minutes to an hour, the authorities said. The supply is being restored in phases.

"The electric supply is interrupted due to TATAs incoming electric supply failure. Inconvenience is regretted," Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) tweeted.

"Due to a technical glitch in Circuit 2 of the Kalva-Padghe powerhouse, the regions between Thane and Mumbai are facing a power cut. Our staff is working on it and power will be restored in an hour or 45 minutes," Maharashtra Energy Minister Nitin Raut said. "It will be restored in approximately an hour," M Raut tweeted at 11:35 am.

Mumbai Power Outage LIVE Updates: Power has been restored in many parts of Mumbai including Lower Parel, Worli, Dadar, Kalina and Charni Road after Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) chief announced that electricity will be back in phases in the financial capital within 10 minutes. A blackout o over 2 hours was reported in Mumbai on Monday with residents taking to Twitter to report power cut across the city, Navi Mumbai and Thane. Multiple tripping of lines and transformer (Kalwa-Padghe and Khargar ICTs) affected 360 MW supply in the city and suburbs. As the city came to a standstill, Mumbai University announced that it has deferred Monday's exam to Sunday, October 18.

Adani Electricity tweeted to inform that AEML is supplying around 385MW to critical services through Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited (AEML) Dahanu. "Our teams are working to restore the supply in the affected areas at the earliest. We regret the inconvenience caused," it tweeted.

The city's civic body has asked hospitals to ensure there is enough supply of diesel for at least eight hours to avoid power failures, especially in the ICUs.

Central Railway trains were restored at 10:55 am.

Within minutes of the outage, people took to social media. Hashtags such as #powercut, #Mumbai and #poweroutage started trending on Twitter. Superstar Amitabh Bachchan was among those who took to social media.

"Entire city in power outage... somehow managing this message... keep calm all shall be well," Mr Bachchan tweeted. "Dongles working. Vodafone is working for me."
